Happy November! Daylight Savings Time begins this weekend. Don’t forget to set your clocks back 1 hour before going to bed on Saturday night and enjoy your extra hour of sleep this weekend.
Enrichment clubs started this week and are off to a great start.
The NYC Marathon passes right in front of PS 172 on Sunday 11/4. Come out and cheer on Mrs. Laird and Mrs. Zutter as they run the marathon. Don’t forget to stop by the PTA bake sale in front of the school from 9:30am-11am, get a sweet treat and support our PTA.
We had a great time at the PS 172 costume parade on Wed. 10/31. The students really enjoyed showing off their costumes. Thanks to all the parents for being excellent spectators and really making the kids feel special! Look for photos taken during the parade on our school dojo and at www.PS172.org
PS 172 is partnering with NYU Langone Health to learn more about kindergartners’ readiness for school in Sunset Park. Kindergarten parents will be asked to complete a survey and will be thanked for their participation with a $10 Target gift card. Look for more information in the coming weeks.
We have been spending a lot of time updating the safety and security procedures in place at PS 172. The changes we have made and continue to make are to ensure that the students and staff can learn, work and play in a place that prioritizes their safety and well being. With this in mind, please be prepared to update the “emergency contact” information on your child’s blue card during PTC on 11/14 and 11/15. According to DOE policy, no student shall be dismissed to anyone not listed on a child’s blue card. In the event of an emergency, a parent can contact the school and let us know about any changes to their child’s “pick up” routine. However, if the name of the person picking the child up is not listed on the blue card, the child will not be able to leave the building. No exceptions can be made. Please take time to consider who will be allowed to pick your child up from school. Is is a brother/ sister? Neighbor? Grandparent? Please plan for the unexpected… During PTC, you will have the chance to update your list. Please come prepared with names of any individual you would like to add. I will provide additional security updates / reminders in my Friday notes in the weeks to come.
PS 172 students will get a “No Homework Night” on Wednesday November 14th. This special “No Homework Night” is meant to make the evening of Parent Teacher Conferences a little less stressful for parents and students.
PS 172’s 2ndofficial “No Homework Weekend” will begin on Wednesday November 21, 2018 to launch the long Thanksgiving weekend.
Great News! All but 3 classroom air conditioners in our school will be replaced for brand new units. Beginning Saturday, our custodial team will remove the old units. Our new AC’s will be installed before the warm weather rolls around again!
Just a few reminders:
School will be closed for students on Tuesday November 6, 2018 for election day
School will be closed on Monday November 12thfor Veterans Day
Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Wed. 11/14 from 5pm-8pm and Thurs. 11/15 from 1pm-3pm. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have not already scheduled an appointment.
All after school programs, including our “After Three” program will be cancelled on 11/14 & 11/15 for PTC. Please make alternate arrangements.
A quick note about Parent Teacher Conferences… In order to make the night move more smoothly please remember that all students are expected to stay with their parents if they attend PTC. Students cannot leave their parents to join up with friends or hang out in a specific classroom. Children must be supervised by their parents for the entirety of the conference!
