We had a great Parents as Learning Partners event earlier today. Thanks to all the parents that participated. I would also like to recognize the students that received their honor roll certificates today. Congratulations on a job well done!
I would also like to thank parents for remembering to wear your “special event” sticker. You really helped to expedite a safe entrance into the building. As you know, in the last several months, we have been updating our building’s security procedures. The school has been working with the NYCDOE office of safety and youth development and the FDNY to ensure that teachers (and students) are prepared for any kind of emergency. Part of the recommendations include adjusting the “flow of traffic” to ensure all building visitors check in to the main office before going to their ultimate destination. The doors to the principal’s office have been closed for this reason. Please do not let closed doors discourage you from visiting with me to discuss any questions or concerns you may have. Parents are always welcome!
Now that the temperatures are dropping, parents should know that the school is committed to providing students with outdoor recess for as long as the weather allows. The NYCDOE wellness policy states that… “unless it is snowing or there is ice on the playground, low temperatures should not be a barrier to outside play, as long as children are appropriately dressed.” Generally, students will go outside for recess as long as temperatures remain 32 degrees and above. If your child has a specific circumstance requiring them to remain indoors, please make sure to contact your child’s teacher or call the main office at (718) 965-4200.
Middle school applications must be filed before the end of the day on Monday December 3rd. If you have not completed your child’s application, I urge you to contact the school early Monday morning for assistance. Mrs. Garcia arrives at school at 7:30 a.m. and is available to answer questions.
If you have not purchased a ticket for the PTA’s most recent raffle, I encourage you to do so. Tickets are $5 each or $20 for a book of five. This year’s prizes are worth the cost of a ticket! Four winners will take home prizes that include an apple mac book, or an LG 43inch smart TV, a Nintendo switch or 5 tickets to Ellis Island. In addition, the two students selling the most tickets will each win an amazon gift card. Winning tickets will be drawn on Saturday December 15that the PTA’s “Breakfast with Santa” event. Don’t miss out! Additional tickets are available from the PTA (PS172Parents@gmail.com) or Mrs. Hendrickson.
