On line Grading system: After meeting with representatives from Pupil Path and speaking with representatives from POWERSCHOOL, we decided to purchase Pupil Path for the 2019-2020 school year. Since Pupil Path is based in NY, it is connected to many NYC DOE programs which gives us the ability to pull information from various NYC DOE Programs such as ATS (attendance- lateness & absence data, State Exam grades), SESIS (IEP information- such as related services & testing accommodations profile), report cards. In house, for P.S. 172 teachers & administration, the system will replace google drive and can possibly replace Class Dojo, messaging system. We will see how it works and will decide if we want to continue the program. There will be training for teachers & staff in September 2019 during professional development days. In speaking with POWERSCHOOL, we discovered the program was not integrated with NYC DOE programs, which would limit the information we could access.
Diversity and Inclusion Initiative:
Ramadan lessons have been made including books to read and crafts to do. A survey was sent home to families to inquire about fasting.
Art and Dance will be making crafts and dances to celebrate Eid
Health Education- AIDS/HIV lessons
We will notify parents to let them know about the lessons in the next 2 weeks. Parents can opt out of one of the lessons, not all. There will be specific lesson plans for each grade level.
For example, in kindergarten, the first lesson is about what makes you healthy, second lesson is about being healthy vs. sick, etc. In fifth grade the lessons go into more details on how you can contact AIDS/HIV (shared needles, sexual intercourse). Fifth grade is the only grade that talks about sex.
Lessons will be implemented before the end of the year, after testing.
Need to come up with a way to share with parents and how they can opt out. Provide a link to the lessons so parents feel more informed about making the decision to opt out or not.
DOE is pushing towards teaching health education
Upper grades all have recorders.
Grade 3 and 4 will have recorders and grade 5 will learn piano. Each child will be given a portable piano to bring home.
Need to look into programs for K-2nd
We will have a theater program called Theater Moves working with the entire first grade for 5 lessons on literacy skills for listening skills, writing with more action, etc.
African Dance will be starting in 3rd grade for west African drum and dance. 4th and 5th grade will have Inside Broadway starting mid May and ending on June 20th celebration. In first grade the children will be having a performance on May 28th about Edward Tulane. June 18th will be a 2nd grade celebration on NY theme.
Art Show will be on May 23rd from 5-7. For next year, we are hoping to have an art fund raiser with framing for the art show . Maybe sell art to raise money and have an ice cream social. Possibly consider publishing a book with all of the art pieces in one book, have art put on a mug, bag, a calendar. Looking into having an art sale with “Artome” where art is framed, hung on walls and displayed for sale. We need to look into prices and give a range (plexy vs. glass).
May 15th Parent Teacher Conferences: There will be performances by 3rd, 4th and 5th grades in music and dance in the auditorium. 4:30 grade 3, 5:30 grade 4, and 6:30 grade 5. June 3rd PTA is having a thank you celebration for parent volunteers with dinner.
Social Emotional program:
We are looking into two programs- ReThink- online program & Sanford Harmony SEL program.
A team of teachers will review both programs to make recommendation for which to use for the 2019-2020 school year.
ReThink online programs utilizes videos and options for lessons and activities to use to teach various skills.
