Scaffolding and Construction:
Scaffolding has been put up for brick pointing. Not sure when the work will begin or be completed.
Classrooms with water damage have had work done to fix the walls from moisture damage.
New windows have been ordered and will be installed.
A new roof will be put on the second story outdoor space and a new cage/covering will be installed.
6 new air conditioners will be installed by the end of February.
None of this work is part of capital funding.
Felix Ortiz approved funding for both cafeterias to have AC units and for new smartboards in classrooms
A letter was sent home today (1/29) to explain the new schedule of lunch recess to accommodate limited space due to scaffolding. All classes will go outside for recess each day (weather permitting).
Parents expressed concerns about children not being able to talk during lunch
Children are told to be quiet when an announcement is being made and it seems to be better now that children are split up into groups (half going outside while half stay in to eat lunch and rotate).
Children who bring lunch are being asked to wait to eat lunch until everyone in their class is served lunch so they all eat at the same time together.
Suggestion: Can teachers offer snacks (collect donations from families) in the upper grades like what is done in the younger grades?
What training is the lunch staff getting to help with discipline? How can we communicate this across the school?
We will give the new structure a few weeks to see if this brings about more positive change in discipline
Reviewed the DOE lice protocol
Concerns by parents that children are not being checked for lice thoroughly
Possibly have school wide lice checks for a nominal fee (Mrs. Hendrickson is going to look into this)
Academic Afterschool and Enrichment
Programs started for academic afterschool and Saturday school
Do we want to use outside providers for enrichment? The current way the enrichment program is being run is not sustainable.
Could we implement a school wide quiet sign (peace sign) and quiet sound (chime) that is consistent across the school
Please keep the recess schedule even after scaffolding comes down
Training for all staff for discipline
Need for anti-bullying school wide
Parents have the right to log instances of bullying online which won’t look good on the school
Children need to feel like they can advocate for themselves
NYU Langone is looking for a bi-lingual provider for our school for a counselor
Parents let teachers know about peer relations that are impacting them
Possible program: Connected and respected program school wide
Empower children when they are bullied, how to handle situations in the classroom,
Need to have an electric file on instances of bullying, etc.
3rd Grade has a World changer program to learn about stereotypes, barriers to break, etc.
Shana Castillo reported that she applied to CCNYC for parents and children to do a series of workshops on civic engagement, to talk about immigration. If the grant comes through the meeting will be on April 13th 9am -1 pm.
Ms. Todras reported that this is the 3rd year that the Inside Broadway grant was granted to tell stories of immigration in 4th and 5th Grades
Ms. Todras and a student are attending youth equity congress once a month
First group meeting of self-selected students met recently
Ms. Todras and Ms. Laird are attending the District 15 diversity congress meetings monthly to represent PS 172
First diversity committee met last week to discuss race, culturally responsive teaching (CRT) and will look at classroom walls, libraries, materials to see who is represented, to open discussions around CRT
Ramadan/Eid celebration is happing on June 7th. Next planning meeting is on Feb. 12th starting at 3:15 pm
Chinese New Year is being taught school-wide. School will be closed on 2/5.
