Principal’s notes for the week ending 3/6/2020

  • Happy March and Happy Women’s History Month.  The 2020 Women's History Month theme is “Valiant Women of the Vote.” The theme honors "the brave women who fought to win suffrage rights for women, and for the women who continue to fight for the voting rights of others."  Go to https://www.womenshistory.org/womens-history/womens-history-monthto learn more.

  • Construction on the 3rd floor girl’s bathroom is almost complete. New flooring, new wall tiles, new toilets and sinks have been installed.  Bathroom partitions are being erected.  We are hopeful that the bathroom will be completed in the next week or two.  

  • The construction crew working on our school’s new gymnasium continue to make progress.  This week, the crew has successfully installed concrete flooring.  Plumbing hook-ups are in place as are connections for any necessary electric. 

  • Thanks to all the parents that met with their child’s teacher this week for parent teacher conferences.  If you were unable to keep your scheduled appointment, kindly contact your child’s teacher to set up a meeting.   

  • Saturday school for students in grades 3-5 continues with our second session tomorrow from 9am – 12:00 noon.  

  • Our second cycle of enrichment after school programs begin next week with Wednesday, Thursday and Friday clubs.  Any clubs meeting on Mondays or Tuesdays will begin the week of March 16th.

  • Parents as Learning Partner will NOT be held in the month of March. The school will be in the midst of state testing.  We will forward information about our next scheduled “learning partners” event with the next calendar.

  • Another note went home this week with updates about the coronavirus (COVID-19).  Teachers have spent time this week studying proper hand washing techniques with students. At P.S. 172, we continue to work to ensure our students stay healthy.  The custodian will continue with daily cleanings and add 2 additional deep cleanings each week.  Light switches and doorknobs will receive regular cleanings and custodial workers will be checking all school bathrooms every 1 1/2 - 2 hours to ensure that soap dispensers are filled and paper towels are available for student use.  Protocols are in place for any children who present with a respiratory illness at school.  Any student with a fever are encouraged to stay home from school.  If your child is home with a respiratory illness, parents should make it a point to contact the school and let us know.  I will continue to forward information as I receive it.

  • Mrs. D’Adamo, our lower grade math coach will be hosting a special math workshop for kindergarten parents.  The workshop will be on Match 16that 8:40 am.  Please check your child’s Class Dojo for more information.

Principal’s notes for the week ending 2/28/2020

  • Thank you for joining us for today’s Parents as Learning Partners event.  Pictures from the day will be posted on Class Dojo.  I encourage you all to take a look. Parents as Learning Partners will not be held in the month of March because of State testing requirements.   

  • During the February break, renovation began on the third floor girl’s bathroom.  The bathroom has been completely demolished.  New floor tile and wall tile has already been installed and grouted. Next up is the installation of new toilets, sinks and bathroom stalls.  The 3rd floor girl’s bathroom will remain closed until construction is complete in approximately 2-3 weeks.  

  • The book fair will be open to students on Monday and Tuesday of next week.  The book fair will be available to families during Parent Teacher Conferences on March 4thand 5th. 

  • The PTA will be hosting a special game night this evening for grandparents or someone special in your child’s life.  The event will be held in the auditorium from 6:30 – 8:30pm. 

  • Permission slips for our second cycle of enrichment programs were sent home this week.  Please make sure to send those slips in with your child as soon as possible.

  • Saturday school begins tomorrow for students in grades 3-5. The program begins at 9am and ends at 12pm.  Please make sure that your child arrives on time to the program.  Breakfast will be served beginning at 8:30am  

  • A note went home this week about the coronavirus (COVID-19) which included a handout of FAQ’s.  Please talk with your child about the importance of frequent hand washing and covering their nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing.  We are reminding children that covering your nose or mouth should be done with a tissue or a sleeve and never your hands.

  • Parent teacher conferences will be held next week on March 4th from 4:30pm – 7:30pm and March 5th from 1-3 pm.  Teachers will meet with parents according to appointment time. In order to accommodate all families, parents that are late for appointments may have their meeting time shortened or be asked to reschedule their meeting for another time.  If you find you need more than your allotted time to speak with your child’s teacher, teachers will be happy to schedule an alternate time to meet.  A reminder of the date and time of your previously scheduled appointment will be sent home next week.

  • On Thursday March 5th, students will have a half day of school.  All students will be dismissed at 12 noon through their regular exits.  Pre-K and kindergarten parents will be able to pick up students from their classrooms beginning at 11:55am.  All after school programs are cancelled for March 4th and 5th.

Principal’s notes for the week ending 2/7/2020

  • Happy February!  If the world’s most famous groundhog can be believed, Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring when he did not see his shadow this past Sunday on Groundhog Day.  Fingers crossed!

  • We are just a week away from our mid-winter recess.  School will be closed from February 17th- 21st. On Friday February 14th the After 3 Program is cancelled.  All students should be picked up at 3:00pm.  Students will receive homework to complete over the break. Don’t forget you can always log in to www.ps172.org and look for grade specific student links to our online reading and math programs.

  • Next week is Respect for All week.  A letter went home with your child today to remind you of the initiative.  In the coming week, teachers will be revisiting lessons focused on preventing bullying and biased based harassment.  February 11this also Safer Internet Day which is a national initiative.  We will take some time next week to remind students about what it means to stay safe online.  The school will be sending home resources for families to support this initiative.  

  • Our student bathrooms are getting an update.  Construction will begin during the mid-winter recess.  In that time, the early childhood bathroom on the first floor will have a new floor and new toilets installed.  The third floor girl’s bathroom will be completely renovated and include new flooring, new wall tiles, stalls, toilets and sinks.  The second floor boy’s bathroom is next on the list for renovation.  I will keep you posted about any upcoming construction.

  • Just a note:  Our pupil path system has not updated attendance since December.  We are currently working with the company to correct the problem.  Student grades and any other data entered are correct.

  • Get ready – Our second report card of the year will be distributed on Wednesday March 4th.  Parent teacher conferences will be held on the evening of March 4thand the afternoon of March 5th.

  • Beginning February 4, parents/guardians will be able to update their cell phone numbers in NYC Schools Account (NYCSA), under the Emergency Contact tab.  Go to https://mystudent.nycto add your contact information.  Contact Mrs. Hendrickson if you need any help logging on.

  • PS 172’s annual Read-A-Thon begins on Valentines day (2/14/20). Please look for a notice coming home (and posted on Dojo) in the next week for more details.  

  • Each day during the week of February 24ththrough February 28th will be dedicated to a celebration of reading and honoring children’s author, Dr. Seuss.  Each day of that week will sponsor a different “dress up” theme and culminate with a chance for students to visit the Scholastic Book Fair on Friday 2/28.  The PTA will be sending home a flyer with additional details.

  • The PTA will be hosting a special game night for grandparents on 2/28 from 6:30 – 8:30pm.  Watch for details.

  • Enrichment forms for Cycle II went home this week.  If you did not receive a notice, please contact the main office.

Principal’s notes for the week ending 1/24/2020

  • In December, visitors from the Astra Center for Innovative Education visited PS 172 in an attempt to learn more about the work we are doing here at the school.  They have recently published a blog post describing their experience. The visitors were very impressed with our "commitment to continuous improvement and genuine care for the well being of students and adults alike.”   If you are interested in reading the post go to https://www.astra.education/single-post/2020/01/22/A-Beacon-of-Excellence-–-and-Agency-1

  • The flu season is in full swing!  If you are lucky enough not to have gotten sick and would like to stay that way you might want to consider getting a flu shot.  The flu vaccine is available at PS 172 free of charge.  A letter from the medical center was sent home with your child today with more details.

  • This spring break, STEM is taking over the city! Kindergarten through grade 12 students can apply now to attend exciting enrichment and experiential learning programs with STEM Matters NYC. A wide range of programs are offered at the NYC Department of Education’s Genovesi Environmental Study Center and NYC Center for Aerospace and Applied Mathematics.  The program will be offered at sites all across the 5 boroughs including The New York Aquarium, the New York Botanical Garden and the Prospect Park Zoo.  If interested, please apply using the “apply now” link provided in this newsletter.

  • Eric Adams, the Brooklyn Borough President has sent home a letter to all Brooklyn families reaffirming his commitment to meatless Mondays and requesting feedback from families. Please check your child’s book bag for the letter.

  • The PTA is sponsoring another FREE movie night.  This week students voted on the movie they wanted to see and Aladdin was the winner. So join us tonight at 7pm and watch a movie with friends and neighbors.  Refreshments will be sold but admission to the movie is free!

  • REMINDER:  For the health and welfare or all of our students, it is important to stay up to date on your child’s immunizations.  The school will contact the parent of any child who is missing one or more vaccinations. Please schedule an appointment as quickly as possible.  Any student not up to date on immunizations runs the risk of being excluded from attending school.

Principal’s notes for the week ending 1/17/2020

  • It was another busy week here at PS 172!

  • Students in kindergarten and first grade classes completed their vision screening. Any student that needed glasses had the opportunity to meet with a doctor to get a new prescription and pick out new frames.  Families will be notified when the glasses arrive.

  • The first cycle of enrichment after-school has ended with the exception of a few clubs making up any missed sessions.  Contact the main office (718-965-4200) if you have a specific question about your child’s club.

  • Our After-School academic intervention program began this week for select students. We hope to be opening our Saturday School Program soon.  I will keep you updated about the starting and ending dates for the program.

  • On Wednesday evening, students participated in an enrichment showcase to celebrate all they have learned.  It was great to see their creativity and excitement.  Thanks to all the parents that came out to celebrate with their child and with all the enrichment students at PS 172.

  • This week, students in kindergarten, third, fourth and fifth grades participated in a safety city workshop.  The instructors pushed into individual classrooms and focused on how to safely cross streets, how to use our senses to check for potential hazards and how to interpret street signs.  Students that participated in the workshops were given a “goody bag”.  Be sure to check the bags for a flyer that describes how to get your free bicycle helmets!

  • The Kindergarten Application will be closing next Tuesday, January 21. If your child was born in 2015, you should be applying now. Sign up for Kindergarten admission emails and for the latest updates, including application deadlines and event information.

  • School will be closed on Monday January 20thfor Martin Luther King Jr. day.  On this day of service, we encourage families to spend time together by participating in some wonderful community projects. Look for my letter in your child’s book bag detailing different community events you may be interested in attending.

  •  Last week’s Dance-A-Thon was a big success.  Thanks to the PTA for hosting and thanks to all the parents and families that raised money for the event.  

  • This week, PS 172 hosted another legal clinic for families dealing with issues or questions about immigration.  I will let you know about any future clinics.  Stay tuned for more information.

  • Hope everyone had a great week!

  • Our second cycle of academic after school sessions will begin during the week of January 13th.  This next cycle is due to last 5 weeks and will end at the time of our mid-winter recess. Please make sure to sign any permission slips that have been sent home.  Students without a signed permission slip will be unable to attend the academic after school program.

  • Our first enrichment after school cycle is ending.  End dates have been sent home with your child, posted on Dojo, and listed on the school calendar (www.ps172.org).  Information about the next enrichment cycle will be distributed by early February.  I will keep you posted about any specific dates / timelines.

  • The PTA’s Dance-A-Thon will be held tonight from 7pm – 9pm.  The proceeds from this event will support our school’s next cycle of enrichment after-school programs.  We hope you can join us!

  • HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  • Our second cycle of academic after school sessions will begin during the week of January 13th.  Students will be invited to the program by their teacher based on their specific academic needs.  If your child is selected, they will bring home a permission slip for you to sign next week.

  • Our first enrichment after school cycle is coming to an end.  The final date for Monday clubs is January 6th, Tuesday clubs will end January 7th, Wednesday clubs will end on January 15th, Thursday ends January 9th and Friday clubs will hold their final session on January 10th.  There are a few exceptions to these end dates.  Your child will receive a notice with specific information.  Club end dates will also be posted on our school calendar.

  • The construction of our new gymnasium is progressing rapidly.  The foundation has already been dug out and the footprint of the new building has been established.  Thankfully, the building has been constructed to maximize the remaining space in the school yard, ensuring that our students will still have access to both indoor and outdoor play.

  • In other construction news, K-201 has a brand new floor and the nurse’s office will have a new floor installed this weekend. PS 172 student bathrooms are due for a complete overhaul and work is expected to begin and end in this school year. I will keep you posted on any potential start dates.

  • The new games that were purchased for “indoor recess” have arrived and students have already had an opportunity to play. Two giant sized connect 4 games, 3 table hockey games, 5 “Simon” games, several sets of extra large dominos and 8 packs of super sized playing cards are available.  Additional copies of checkers, tic tac toe, Uno cards and Perfection board games are still on order and will be made available to students in the cafeteria as soon as they arrive.

Principal’s notes for the week ending 12/20/2019

  • It is hard to believe that winter recess is already here.   Today, PS 172 teachers and students showed up in their PJ’s for school spirit day.  Check out class dojo to see some pictures.

  • Congratulations to our kindergarten and first grade students for their performances this week.  Kindergarten students presented their annual holiday show for parents and first graders gave a choral performance highlighting their study of community and the way celebrations help bind a community together.

  • Congratulations to our 4thgrade teachers and students for their production of Wonder which was debuted for parents on Wednesday evening.  The students did such a terrific job that we organized a second showing for our second and third graders on Thursday morning. A special shout out to Mrs. Todras, who wrote and directed the musical and to Mr. Mannino for his musical direction.

  • This week, 10 of our students worked with student mentors from Williamsburg High School for Architecture and Design to construct two Little Free Lending Libraries. Each library will be placed in a separate location.  Community members are encouraged to take a book and leave a book so that the library is automatically replenished.  We plan to leave one library inside the school building (at least for now) and post another on the perimeter of the building.  We will be scouting out an appropriate location.

  • On Wednesday afternoon, our fifth graders buddied up with a kindergarten student to read a holiday themed book and complete a connected craft.  The fifth graders developed their own lesson plans for the occasion.  The students had a great time!!

Principal’s notes for the week ending 12/13/2019

  • Great news!!! Eight teachers at PS 172 were nominated for the 2019-2020 Big Apple Teacher’s Award.  Congratulations to Mrs. Coppa, Mrs. DeGuida, Ms. DeMartino, Mrs. Fava, Mrs. Jimenez, Ms. Kokur and Mrs. Todras.  

  • I would also like to congratulate our 4th grade students.  They put on a wonderful show this week as part of the My Plate nutrition program.

  • Next week, kindergarten students will be performing their winter holiday show for parents at 8:50 am on Wednesday 12/18.  On that same day at 5:30pm, our 4th graders will be performing their production of “Wonder”.  First grade students will perform for parents the following day (1:45pm on Thursday 12/19). We remind parents/ guests to please wear the guest sticker in a conspicuous location, so that security can easily identify that you are here for the show.

  • Just a reminder, there is no Parents as Learning Partners scheduled for the month of December.  Remember too, that Friday 12/20 is a school spirit day.  Students are invited to come to school wearing a pair of cozy pajamas. 

  • The PTA is sponsoring a “Breakfast with Santa” tomorrow at 10am.  The event is sold out and no additional tickets will be available at the door. 

  • Our school will be building a Little Free (lending) Library for the community. Next week, approximately 10 students from PS 172, will partner with some local high school students to construct a library lending box.  I will be sure to publish pictures on class dojo of the event and I encourage all our community members to feel free to borrow a book as soon as the library is made available to the community.

  • The Middle School application process closes today.  If you have not submitted your child’s application, please do so before the end of business today!  

  • The 5th grade graduation committee has organized a school-wide raffle to help raise money for the PTA.  The PTA raises money to alleviate graduation expenses for families. While your child may not be a PS 172 “senior” at this time, they will be in the near future.  Please support our PTA and consider buying / selling raffle tickets.  Raffle winners will take home some great prizes including a Nintendo Switch, a brand new laptop, a flat screen television, a Cricut Explore and a mystery prize.  The student that sells the most raffle tickets will take home a $100 Amazon gift card. Each ticket costs $5 and a book of 5 tickets cost $20.  If you are interested in purchasing (or selling) tickets contact the PTA at PS172parents@gmail.comor come to the main office. Raffle winners will be announced on Saturday December 14th at the breakfast with Santa PTA event.  You do not need to be present to win.  All winners will be contacted by phone.

  • The new recess plan was enacted this week.  We began our auditorium games, have opened up the playground when the weather was cooperating and made the art room available to our upper grade students.  Today, students had their “movie” recess and next week, we hope to begin our cafeteria game time.  If any parent would like to donate a DVD they think their child and other school children will appreciate on movie day, please send in those donation to the main office.

  • December is a short month but there is a lot going on. Here are some important dates for your calendar:
